Max Verstappen’s participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring is now a real possibility. The Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) has officially moved one of its events, removing the scheduling conflict that previously prevented the four-time Formula 1 world champion from taking part. Max Verstappen had previously stressed that, to compete in the historic endurance race, he would need to attend at least one NLS event beforehand. After discussions involving key Mercedes executives, the German series adjusted its calendar accordingly.
The endurance world is buzzing
The endurance racing community is excited: Max Verstappen could soon make his mark in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Interest in his participation has been evident for some time, especially after his official debut on the Nordschleife last season. The race itself is scheduled for the weekend of May 17, 2026, conveniently away from the Formula 1 Grand Prix calendar.
However, there was a hurdle to clear. Verstappen needed to compete in at least one NLS weekend prior to the main event. Under the original schedule, every round clashed with Formula 1 races, leaving no room for the Dutch driver. After careful consideration by the NLS organizers, and possibly consulting with Mercedes bosses Toto Wolff and Ola Källenius, a decision was finally made.
NLS moves second round to accommodate F1 stars
The reason behind the change is clear: Mercedes wants Verstappen to compete in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in a Mercedes-AMG GT3. In an official statement, the Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie announced the date shift for its second event.
“The VLN has decided to move the second round of the ADAC RAVENOL Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) 2026 to March 21,” the statement read. “Advancing the race by one week opens a free window in the Formula 1 calendar, allowing participation from drivers of the premier class and other international series.”
“The goal is also to further strengthen the global visibility the NLS gained last year thanks to Max Verstappen’s participation, benefiting all teams and competitors. The start of the season, scheduled for March 14, 2026, remains unchanged.”
The 2026 season is shaping up to be a historic one for Max Verstappen, as he balances his Formula 1 title defense with his passion for endurance racing. The NLS calendar shift not only highlights Max Verstappen’s immense influence on the motorsport world but also underscores the growing synergy between the pinnacle of single-seater racing and the legendary ‘Green Hell.’ For fans, the prospect of seeing an active F1 champion tackle the Nürburgring 24 Hours in a Mercedes-AMG is a rare crossover that promises to make this year truly unforgettable.
