Max Verstappen was visibly frustrated after finishing only sixth in the sprint qualifying session for the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Dutch driver was unable to match the pace of his main rivals, even finishing behind an impressive Fernando Alonso. Red Bull’s lack of performance stood out at Interlagos, with both Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda struggling with instability, particularly through Turn 4 during free practice.
The session marked another difficult outing for the reigning world champion, who now finds himself on the back foot for the sprint race. With his two McLaren rivals set to start from first and third, Max Verstappen could see a significant shift in momentum in the championship battle. While the points available in the sprint are limited, the competitive gap shown by Red Bull raised concerns within the team. Historically, Red Bull has often started weekends slowly before recovering, but with such a tight title fight, every sprint point could prove decisive.
Verstappen’s reaction after sprint qualifying
Over the team radio, Max Verstappen immediately voiced his frustration, saying: “It’s tough, it feels like something’s broken. It’s undrivable.” Later, speaking to the media, the Dutchman explained his situation in more detail: “I had a lot of vibrations in the car and also big issues with ride height. I can’t get the car to turn, and at the same time I can’t rely on the rear end either.”
His disappointment was evident, as he highlighted deeper problems with Red Bull’s setup: “We don’t have just one issue — in the middle sector, the car is a tragedy.” When asked whether rain could change their fortunes in the sprint, Verstappen responded: “We’ll definitely give it a try. It’s clear that we’re missing something, and I don’t expect us to suddenly improve massively in the wet, but we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
With McLaren looking strong and both Ferrari drivers within striking distance, Max Verstappen faces an uphill challenge to recover lost ground. However, given Red Bull’s history of turning around difficult weekends, the Dutchman will be hoping for a quick comeback when racing gets underway at Interlagos.
