Nürburgring, Verstappen “excluded” from qualifying: the reason explained
What happened at the Nürburgring is almost unbelievable. According to Motorsport Turkey, Max Verstappen was not allowed to take part in the qualifying sessions at the Nordschleife. The reason? Being too fast. Yes, in an unusual and highly unexpected situation, performance itself appears to have become the limiting factor.
Behind this decision from the Max Verstappen Racing team, it seems there are regulations linked to the Balance of Performance (BoP). In categories where BoP is applied, performance is artificially balanced between different cars in order to maintain competitive equality. However, in this case, Verstappen’s pace created a very specific concern.
Following his previous on-track demonstration, where he posted lap times close to the Nordschleife record pace, it was considered that an excessively fast qualifying lap could potentially trigger a BoP adjustment or even a penalty for the team. In other words, pure speed may have become a strategic risk rather than an advantage.
“I wanted to drive the car in Sunday’s qualifying, but the team didn’t allow me,” Max Verstappen admitted, confirming that the decision came internally rather than from external enforcement alone.
The situation highlights how unusual regulations such as BoP can directly influence even elite-level drivers when performance thresholds become sensitive. In this case, rather than chasing outright pace, the team appears to have chosen caution to avoid possible regulatory consequences linked to exceeding expected performance benchmarks.
While highly unusual for a Formula 1 world champion like Max Verstappen, the incident underlines how different racing categories can impose completely different strategic priorities, where being the fastest on track is not always the safest option for the overall weekend outcome.
