Max Verstappen at a crossroads: Johnny Herbert says Red Bull era should end soon. Johnny Herbert believes Max Verstappen should leave Red Bull after the 2025 F1 season.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull 2024 F1

According to former Formula 1 driver and current analyst Johnny Herbert, the end of the 2025 season represents the perfect moment for Max Verstappen to leave Red Bull Racing and give himself the best possible chance to fight for future Formula 1 World Championships—especially in the context of the sport’s upcoming regulatory overhaul in 2026.

Verstappen at a Crossroads
The recent and controversial dismissal of Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has raised eyebrows across the paddock. The timing and execution of the decision have sparked speculation about its possible connection to the future of Max Verstappen. Many observers believe the move may have been a strategic attempt by the Red Bull leadership to appease the Dutch driver, whose camp has often clashed behind the scenes with Horner over the past year.

In essence, the decision could be interpreted as a plea for Max Verstappen to remain with the team. The awareness within Red Bull is clear: without Verstappen—arguably the most dominant driver of the hybrid era—their competitiveness could suffer a significant decline.

The choice ultimately rests with Max Verstappen himself. Had Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team been the sole driving force, they would have likely already secured the Dutchman’s signature. But Verstappen is the one holding the cards and will base his decision on which team offers the most compelling guarantees for future competitiveness—especially as the 2026 regulation changes approach. A clearer picture of his intentions may emerge during the upcoming summer break, most likely after the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.

Johnny Herbert’s View
Johnny Herbert, who competed in Formula 1 through the 1990s and now offers expert commentary, believes the moment has come for the four-time World Champion to take the next step in his career. Speaking to RacingNews365, Herbert said, “I think it’s the right time. Every driver is constantly evaluating where the best place is to win races or a world championship. Max Verstappen is no different, and I’m sure he is fully aware of what’s happening inside Red Bull, the situation they’re facing, and the rumors surrounding other teams as well.”

Herbert suggested that Mercedes has likely presented Verstappen with a clear offer and vision for the future. “From what we’ve heard about the talks that have reportedly taken place with Mercedes, I’m certain they’ve told him, ‘This is where we see ourselves going—you should come to us.’”

While acknowledging Red Bull’s phenomenal achievements over the past decade, Herbert also pointed out that the team’s dominance may be fading. “Red Bull has done remarkable things over the last 10 years, but they’re starting to fade a bit. Now might be the right time for Max to consider something new.”

With the 2026 technical regulations promising a new era in Formula 1, including revised engine architecture and aerodynamic changes, Max Verstappen’s next move could determine whether he continues his dominance or risks a step backward. Teams are already shifting their focus to development for the new rules, and Max Verstappen, known for his calculated approach, will be weighing every option with long-term championship potential in mind.
