Max Verstappen’s long-awaited bid for victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours ended in heartbreak, but not before delivering one of the most entertaining battles of the entire event.
The four-time Formula 1 world champion looked firmly on course for a landmark endurance racing triumph before technical problems destroyed the Mercedes-AMG GT3 #3 team’s hopes. A rear axle issue initially forced an extended repair stop of more than an hour, before a broken driveshaft ultimately ended the car’s race with just over three hours remaining.
At the time of the retirement, Verstappen’s car — shared with Daniel Juncadella, Lucas Auer and Jules Gounon — had been leading comfortably, making the final result even more painful for the crew.
Yet even before the mechanical drama, Max Verstappen had faced fierce pressure from a familiar rival within the Mercedes-AMG camp.
Maro Engel and Max Verstappen’s unforgettable night battle
The biggest on-track threat to Verstappen’s charge came from the sister Mercedes-AMG GT3 #80, also operated by Team Winward, with Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller and Maxime Martin behind the wheel.
What followed was one of the defining spectacles of the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
Through the darkness of the Nordschleife, Maro Engel and Max Verstappen engaged in a relentless wheel-to-wheel duel, pushing their GT3 machinery to the absolute limit while weaving aggressively through slower traffic across multiple categories.
The battle produced several heart-stopping moments, including a particularly tense near-collision at the end of the iconic Döttinger Höhe straight, where Maro Engel was forced onto the grass while attempting a counterattack on Max Verstappen.
Despite the intensity, the German driver had nothing but admiration for the fight: “I have to say I absolutely loved battling against him,” Maro Engel told GPBlog. “It was incredibly fun to watch him pushing the Mercedes to the limit and exploring every edge during the night, and I think it was the same for him.”
“It’s special to see a driver like Max come here to race, and of course he did an incredible job. While I was in the car fighting with him, I was smiling to myself. It was genuinely great fun.”
Max Verstappen’s impact on the Nürburgring 24 Hours
For Maro Engel, Max Verstappen’s presence brought value far beyond the racing itself.
The German highlighted the dramatic growth in attendance, noting that after around 280,000 spectators attended the previous edition, this year’s crowd exceeded 350,000 — a surge he believes was significantly influenced by Max Verstappen’s participation.
“It’s incredible,” Maro Engel said. “I think a huge part of that was thanks to Verstappen. He has clearly helped put this race even more firmly on the global motorsport map, and we should definitely be grateful for that.”
Maro Engel also joked that while the drivers were enjoying every second of the action, the same could not necessarily be said for the engineers monitoring the race from the pit wall.
“His driving is always fantastic, and I’m sure we were enjoying ourselves in the car more than the guys on the team, who were probably a little more tense and likely appreciated it when things calmed down a bit afterward.”
Why moments like this define racing drivers
For Maro Engel, the overnight duel with Max Verstappen captured exactly why racing drivers keep coming back for events like the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
“When you’re behind the wheel, these are the moments you live for as a racing driver,” he said – “And at night, on a circuit like this, it becomes something even more extraordinary. It’s truly special.”
Especially when the fight is against someone like Max Verstappen.
