Max Verstappen wants Mugello’s return
The circuits where Max Verstappen has never won can be counted on one hand. The notable exception is the Singapore Grand Prix, which never smiled on the three-time world champion even during Red Bull’s golden years, but there are also five other tracks where the Dutchman has failed to make his mark in Formula 1. One of these is Mugello, where Super Max has only raced once, in 2020, when Covid-19 hit the Circus hard.
That weekend was particularly unlucky for the world champion, as his race lasted just two corners due to power unit problems that caused his Red Bull to stall, followed by his involvement in the incident between Pierre Gasly and Kimi Raikkonen. Yet, the little experience he had at Mugello is enough for Max to want the Scarperia and San Piero circuit to return to the Formula 1 calendar.
Max Verstappen’s comments
“I would like Mugello on the calendar. It’s a track with a series of very fast corners. In the championship, there are many ‘stop and go’ circuits, but this one has a fantastic sequence of fast turns,” said the Dutchman during Pirelli’s first vodcast, Box Box Box, where he was a guest alongside FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis and McLaren team principal Andrea Stella.
However, an actual return of Mugello to Formula 1, a desire Max Verstappen has expressed in the past, seems unlikely in the short term, primarily because there are already two circuits in Italy (Monza and Imola), and keeping both in 2026 will be very complicated. Additionally, the Italian circuit is quite narrow, at least for modern Formula 1 cars, a problem also encountered at tracks like Imola, Zandvoort, and Montmeló, which are all at risk in the near future.
