Piastri and Norris on the brink of contact
The races leading Formula 1 up to the summer break have clearly confirmed the superiority of the McLaren team and given fans a glimpse of the battles to come from Zandvoort onwards. It is increasingly evident that, barring highly unlikely scenarios, the 2025 Drivers’ Championship will be a straight duel between McLaren teammates Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The two drivers are separated by just nine points in the standings and are determined to claim the first Formula 1 World Championship of their respective careers. To achieve this, they will have to challenge each other fiercely as teammates, setting aside traditional notions of sportsmanship and diplomacy on the track.
Tensions were already visible in Austria, where Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris engaged in a close battle at turn 4. In this incident, the Australian driver locked up his front right tire, narrowly avoiding contact with the rear of his teammate’s car. Despite the intensity of the duel, both drivers maintained control and respected limits, demonstrating their professionalism and maturity. However, in Hungary, that composure nearly broke down. The championship leader, possibly frustrated by the strategic decisions of the McLaren pit wall, attempted a nearly desperate overtaking maneuver on the penultimate lap to pass Lando Norris at turn 1. Once again, no contact occurred, but the incident highlighted the potential for escalation if tensions continue to rise.
The words of Montoya
Juan Pablo Montoya, the Colombian former Formula 1 and IndyCar champion, weighed in on the situation. “The reality is that Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could now have their only chance to become world champions. That naturally creates a bit of tension,” Montoya said. “They used to get along very well, but look at Oscar: his comments are becoming sharper, he is getting agitated. He is trying to stay on track, while Lando is trying to fight back into contention.”
Montoya went on to underline the uncertainty that hangs over the McLaren team’s future performance. “No one can guarantee that McLaren will have the best car next year,” he added. “We are dealing with a new set of regulations. It could happen that McLaren wins everything again, or we could reach the next season with a team that can’t even break into the top ten.”
The Colombian’s comments highlight the delicate balance that exists when teammates are both competitive and ambitious. For Oscar Piastri, the young Australian star who has already impressed in his third Formula 1 season with multiple race wins, and for Lando Norris, the experienced British driver who has also been in outstanding form, the opportunity to fight for a first world title may be fleeting. With a new technical regulation on the horizon and intense intra-team battles, both drivers must navigate not only the pressure of racing at the highest level, but also the dynamics of competing against a close teammate for glory.
Montoya’s analysis suggests that while the McLaren duo are exceptionally talented, the combination of high stakes and the potential for a shift in the pecking order in 2026 could make this championship battle particularly intense. Fans can expect thrilling moments and heated duels as Piastri and Norris aim to maximise their opportunity in what may well be their best shot at claiming a Formula 1 World Championship.
