It will be crucial not to be caught unprepared. Mario Andretti and Cadillac are well aware of this as they deliberate on the driver lineup for 2026, considering Colton Herta, Sergio Perez, and various market opportunities.
The American team is gradually putting the pieces together. From selecting a team principal to finalizing the power unit supplier, General Motors has only a few months before the much-anticipated launch of its new racing venture.
Who Will Drive for Cadillac?
One thing is certain: the new team aims to have a lineup that balances youth and experience. In this context, one of the main candidates is Colton Herta, the young talent who has become a veteran in IndyCar. “Recently, he had the opportunity to take part in F1 tests with McLaren, and Andrea Stella’s report was very positive. So yes, I’d say Colton could be a great candidate for a seat,” said Mario Andretti.
“Over the years, Colton Herta has proven to be a very versatile driver, and the fact that he is competitive on all types of circuits is definitely a positive. He has everything it takes to be a champion,” Andretti added. “As for the 2026 drivers, it’s something we are constantly considering, and we will likely make a decision around mid-season. The goal is to have an American driver and a veteran.”
However, the super license issue needs to be resolved. The American driver, who has yet to obtain the much-coveted “special license,” must finish the IndyCar season within the top five and can also gain additional points through FP1 sessions in Formula 1. It’s not an impossible goal, but it is crucial for 2026.
