At a standstill
Sergio Perez’s Formula 1 career is at serious risk of ending permanently following the early termination of his relationship with Red Bull at the end of this season. For 2025, the Mexican driver will not hold any role, whether as an official driver or test driver, at Milton Keynes or with any other team in the paddock. Consequently, barring unexpected developments mid-season, any plans for a potential return are postponed until 2026.
The U.S. alternative
However, like many other drivers, Checo might want to return to racing as soon as possible, though not necessarily in Formula 1. A possible example, staying within the world of open-wheel racing, could be IndyCar. In recent years, the American series has welcomed several former Formula 1 drivers, such as Romain Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson, and Perez might follow a similar path.
Although there are no rumors of ongoing negotiations, former McLaren mechanic Marcus Priestley, now a technical commentator for Sky Sports F1, believes a move to the U.S. is possible for the 34-year-old. “Sergio Perez has a massive fanbase and strong commercial backing,” Priestley explained to Casino Uden Rofus. “He can race in another category; IndyCar might be the most obvious choice at this moment, but it’s up to him. Sometimes drivers reach the twilight of their long F1 careers and, when their time in the sport comes to an end, they may prioritize family time. Perez still has several options ahead of him, I have no doubt.”
