Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to take Formula 1 by storm. The young Italian star, now in his second season in the sport, has been collecting victories and breaking records at an astonishing rate. Of the six races held so far in the 2026 campaign, he has failed to win only the season opener.
Last weekend in Monte Carlo, the Mercedes driver delivered yet another mature and controlled performance, securing his fifth consecutive victory and further strengthening his grip on the championship.
Kimi Antonelli is now the first driver in Formula 1 history to achieve such a streak following his maiden Grand Prix victory. Before him, no driver had managed to win more than three races in a row after claiming their first career success. Antonelli has now extended that record to five.
His impressive pace, remarkable consistency and growing collection of victories have helped him establish a commanding lead in the world championship standings. The Italian currently holds a 66-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton and a 68-point cushion over George Russell.
As a result, comparisons have inevitably started to emerge. Among fans, some have even suggested that Antonelli could become the heir to Ayrton Senna. Within the paddock, however, the more common comparison is with modern Formula 1’s benchmark driver: four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
Marco Antonelli: “Verstappen must be an example for Kimi”
Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli has made extraordinary progress compared to last season, his father Marco Antonelli believes that drawing comparisons with Max Verstappen at this stage is both premature and potentially dangerous.
“I think it is still far too early to compare Kimi to Max. Verstappen is a friend and a great guy. Of course, there is a clear similarity because they are both very fast. However, Max already has four world titles, while Kimi still has a long way to go before reaching the same level of achievement,” Marco Antonelli explained.
He continued by stressing that Verstappen should currently serve as a source of inspiration rather than a direct point of comparison.
“I hope that one day he can get close to what Max has achieved, but at this stage the Dutchman should mainly be an example for him,” Marco Antonelli reportedly told GPBlog.com.
The relationship between the two drivers is also said to be very positive away from the track.
“The two of them speak almost every race weekend, and it is nice that they have that relationship. Verstappen, obviously, as a driver, is on another level.”
While Kimi Antonelli’s sensational rise has understandably generated excitement throughout Formula 1, his father’s comments serve as a reminder that even the brightest young talents still have a long journey ahead before they can be measured against the sport’s most accomplished champions.
