Having entered F1 in 2023 to replace Daniel Ricciardo mid-season, the New Zealand driver returned to the grid at the end of 2024, once again taking over from the Australian. In 2025, Liam Lawson had his opportunity with the Austrian team, but Red Bull’s lack of patience didn’t allow him to last more than two weekends alongside Max Verstappen: by the third round of the championship, he was already sent back to VCARB.
In his place stepped Yuki Tsunoda, who seems to have a better connection with the Milton Keynes car. Meanwhile, the nightmare continues for Liam Lawson, who had shown good performances with the Faenza-based team in previous seasons, but is now struggling to deliver results there as well.
In the opening races of the championship, Isack Hadjar has defeated Lawson 4–0 in their head-to-head — despite the New Zealander having more Grand Prix experience than the French rookie. These disappointing results have led former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya to question whether Lawson will remain on the grid for long.
Liam Lawson ready to give up his seat?
“If Liam doesn’t improve further, I wouldn’t be surprised if VCARB puts Lindblad in the car at some point.” The 2007-born driver, backed by the Red Bull Junior Team, impressed in F3, where he finished fourth. In 2025, he started his racing season by winning the Formula Regional Oceania title. In F2, he claimed his first victory in the category at Jeddah, becoming the youngest to do so.
“Last year, Liam showed he had what it takes to do a good job. He earned the Red Bull seat. Things got complicated there, and I think he took a big hit to his confidence. Now he needs a lot of psychological support.” Juan Pablo Montoya concluded: “If Liam doesn’t recover soon, I’m sure Red Bull will start looking elsewhere.”
