F1 Monza GP, Lawson responds to Sainz: “Angry? That’s his problem, the rules are clear”
At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Liam Lawson returned to the incident with Carlos Sainz and made his position clear once again: “The rules are clear, I was just defending my position.”
The young New Zealander wanted to explain once more how he sees the clash that involved him and the Spanish driver during the restart at Zandvoort. Lawson did not hide his surprise at Sainz’s reaction, pointing out that the rules on overtaking are straightforward and leave little room for interpretation.
“I was defending, he was attacking”
Speaking firmly on the eve of the Monza weekend, Lawson stated: “If the incident had been my fault, I would have been penalized. Instead, it was him who received the sanction, and to me that makes it clear. I don’t understand why I was described as aggressive, I was only defending and Carlos was the one trying to overtake.”
The Racing Bulls driver also highlighted the difficult circumstances of the moment: “It was the first lap after the safety car, on cold hard tyres, with everyone on the same new set. It’s a tricky corner and Carlos didn’t get his front axle where it needed to be. At that point, why should I have given him space?”
Carlos Sainz, on the other hand, had described the penalty as “ridiculous” and accused Liam Lawson of having an “overly risky” driving style. Liam Lawson, however, avoided direct confrontation: “I didn’t go on the radio or to the media to complain. He did, but I don’t understand why, since he was the one attacking, not me.”
The relationship between the two drivers remains cold, as Lawson admitted: “We haven’t spoken after the race. I thought that, since he was so angry, he would come to me, but he didn’t.”
The tension may continue, but Liam Lawson seems determined to move on. At Monza, his main focus will be on turning the pace of the Racing Bulls into valuable points, leaving the controversy behind.
