The New Zealander will have to recover
Liam Lawson, Sergio Perez‘s replacement at Red Bull, started by negatively emulating his predecessor. The New Zealand driver was eliminated in Q1 during the Australian GP Qualifying.
There are mitigating factors for Liam Lawson. Max Verstappen’s teammate missed the entire third practice session due to technical issues, and the lack of mileage on the soft tires took its toll in Q1.
In his first attempt, Liam Lawson went into the gravel at Turn 4, in his second attempt he had a noticeable slide in the fast direction change after the timing beam of the second sector. Finally, in his attempt to recover, he ran wide onto the grass at the penultimate corner, then went directly into the pit lane. These were his words to Sky Sport F1: “I missed running with the softs because we lost the entire third practice session, and in Q1, it showed. I will try to recover tomorrow.” – he explained – “We expected the start of qualy to be tough. To be honest, the first laps were expected to be off and we were planning to build through the session. Obviously going off on that second lap but everything out of order. Then the last lap was good just until the last sector when I had a big drop [in tyres]. Missing P3 doesn’t help any of us but I also shouldn’t be going off in qualy.”
