On Thursday evening, it was officially announced that Daniel Ricciardo would be replaced by Liam Lawson as the second driver for the RB team. The Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay street circuit was his last race weekend in Formula 1.
Like many drivers, Lewis Hamilton made a post in honor of his friend and colleague, who has ended his journey in the sport.
Shortly after the announcement, Daniel Ricciardo posted on Instagram, confirming his retirement from Formula 1, and the seven-time world champion left a comment simply saying “legend.”
Lewis Hamilton’s comments for Daniel Ricciardo in the post
After leaving the comment, the British driver returned to Instagram to support Daniel Ricciardo with a dedicated post. He shared a series of photos of himself with the Australian. The first shot dates back to the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where the two of them are seen on the podium while Daniel Ricciardo performs his famous “shoey” celebration.
The “shoey” consists of taking off a shoe that has been worn throughout the GP, pouring the sparkling wine given to the top 3 on the podium into it, and finally drinking. Many drivers have found it amusing, but also a bit disgusting.
The photos are accompanied by a message for Ricciardo, in which Hamilton congratulates him on his career and thanks him for all the battles they had on the track.
“@danielricciardo, it’s been an honor competing with you over the years. I’ll never forget the battles, the laughs, and drinking from your shoe 🤢. It was disgusting, but I’m glad I did it with you,” wrote the seven-time world champion.
He then concluded the post by writing: “You leave a legacy of always being yourself, which in this sport is never easy. You got through it all with the biggest smile, and I commend you for that. There’s so much more coming for you, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. I’m always here for you, friend.”
