Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton acknowledged that he thought Max Verstappen had been involved in an incident when he noticed a “plume of smoke” during the early laps of the Mexico City Grand Prix, which was held last weekend at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.
On lap 10 of 71 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Max Verstappen collided with the McLaren MCL38 of Lando Norris twice, with Lewis Hamilton positioned perfectly to witness the second incident as they approached Turn 7.
As a result of the clash with the McLaren single-seater, the Red Bull driver later received a 10-second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an unfair advantage by forcing Norris wide. In addition, he faced a similar penalty for pushing the British driver off at Turn 4, which meant he had to spend a total of 20 seconds in the pits during his only stop of the Mexican Grand Prix.
Despite the penalties, the three-time Formula 1 world champion managed to recover and finish sixth, while Lando Norris secured second place after overtaking Charles Leclerc in the final stages of the race. However, Norris might have claimed victory if it weren’t for the interference from the three-time world champion.
Although Lewis Hamilton had not yet seen the replay of the incident at Turn 7, he expressed no surprise that his former rival played a significant role in the unfolding drama ahead of him on the track.
