While the São Paulo weekend ended in anger and frustration for Lewis Hamilton, the Las Vegas weekend began with positive feelings for the Mercedes veteran. The seven-time world champion—who is just three races away from leaving the Silver Arrows to start his adventure with Ferrari—set the fastest lap in both the first and second free practice sessions. A significant step forward for the Brackley team, which also benefited his teammate George Russell, but Hamilton struggles to explain it.
“I feel pretty good; I think it’s the first time I’ve had a day like this this year. The car was really good in FP1, a bit less so in FP2, so there’s some work to do tonight. But it’s hard to know exactly where we are or why we are where we are, but I had quite a bit of fun driving on this track, and we’ll see if the car performs this well again tomorrow,” commented #44 at the end of the second free practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The cold that envelops Las Vegas at night seems to help the W15, but looking ahead to the race, concerns from throughout the season resurface: “The race pace wasn’t that great,” Lewis Hamilton acknowledged. “So we’ll need to work overnight to figure out how to improve the pace without losing out on single-lap speed. Today was fun, though: it was nice to be able to put together consecutive good sectors without the car throwing me around,” the Mercedes driver concluded.
