Antonelli king of the Principality: every record after his Monaco masterpiece
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend was nothing short of flawless. If anything, the scale of his achievement becomes even more impressive when looking at the extraordinary list of records that emerged from his triumph on the streets of Monte Carlo.
The young Italian arrived in the Principality as the championship leader and left having strengthened his position in spectacular fashion, adding his name to several exclusive Formula 1 lists while breaking records that had stood for years.
Antonelli enters Formula 1 history
Thanks to his victory on Sunday, the driver born in 2006 became the youngest driver ever to stand on the top step of the podium at Monaco. In doing so, he surpassed Lewis Hamilton, who had previously achieved the feat at the age of 23.
Looking at the entire weekend, Antonelli also became the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to record a Grand Slam. This prestigious achievement combines pole position, victory after leading every lap of the race, and the fastest lap. The previous youngest holder of the record was Max Verstappen, who achieved the same feat at 23 years of age.
Antonelli is now the 28th driver in Formula 1 history to complete a Grand Slam. More significantly, he becomes only the sixth driver ever to achieve it at Monaco, joining an elite group consisting of Juan Manuel Fangio, Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen. He is also the first Italian driver to accomplish the feat on the streets of the Principality.
Joining an exclusive group of Italian winners
Speaking of Italian motorsport history, Kimi Antonelli has become only the third Italian driver to win a Formula 1 race in Monaco.
His victory comes 22 years after Jarno Trulli’s famous triumph in 2004, which itself arrived 22 years after Riccardo Patrese’s victory in 1982. The success therefore continues a remarkable sequence for Italian drivers in Monte Carlo, further strengthening Antonelli’s place among the country’s Formula 1 greats.
A series of unprecedented achievements
And the records do not stop there.
Antonelli has become the first driver in Formula 1 history to claim his first five career victories consecutively. His winning streak began in China and continued through Japan, Miami, Canada and now Monaco, a sequence that highlights the remarkable start to his Formula 1 career.
He is also the first driver ever to convert his first four pole positions into victories. Those wins came after starting from pole in China, Japan, Miami and Monaco, underlining both his qualifying speed and his ability to deliver under race conditions.
In addition, the Mercedes driver has now equalled Lewis Hamilton’s personal best streak of five consecutive Formula 1 victories. Antonelli becomes only the tenth driver in the history of the sport to win at least five races in a row.
The significance of that statistic becomes even clearer when considering the names on the list. The other nine drivers to have achieved the feat are all Formula 1 World Champions: Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel, Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Nico Rosberg, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Nigel Mansell and Lewis Hamilton.
Climbing the all-time Formula 1 rankings
With his Monte Carlo triumph, Antonelli also moves onto five career Formula 1 victories, drawing level with Giuseppe Farina, Clay Regazzoni, John Watson, Michele Alboreto and Keke Rosberg.
That tally places him 59th on the all-time Formula 1 winners list, another notable milestone for a driver who has not yet celebrated his twentieth birthday.
A championship lead unlike any seen before
Perhaps the most striking statistic of all concerns the World Championship standings.
The 66-point advantage that Antonelli now holds over second-placed Lewis Hamilton represents the largest lead ever recorded after six races of a Formula 1 season. Even when applying proportional comparisons to previous points systems used throughout Formula 1 history, no driver had ever managed to establish such a significant gap over their closest rival at this stage of a championship campaign.
It is a measure not only of Antonelli’s speed, but also of his consistency, racecraft and ability to maximise every opportunity presented to him during the opening phase of the season.
A 19-year-old rewriting the record books
This is Kimi Antonelli: a 19-year-old driver, who will turn 20 in August, steadily rewriting the history of Formula 1 one race at a time.
With every passing weekend, the Mercedes star continues to achieve milestones that once seemed out of reach for someone so young. The records continue to fall, and the list of comparisons with some of the sport’s greatest champions grows longer with each victory.
If Antonelli continues on this trajectory, Formula 1 may soon need more than new records to describe his achievements. It might even need a new vocabulary capable of doing justice to what the young Italian is accomplishing on the world stage.
