Aston Martin: Stroll addresses rumors about Newey
The start of the 2026 Formula 1 season exposed Aston Martin’s challenges, and the first two races accelerated the need for changes within the Silverstone team to close the significant gap to the competition. It is no coincidence that after Shanghai, rumors surfaced about a team reshuffle, with Adrian Newey potentially refocusing solely on the technical side and stepping back from the team principal role.
The Aston Martin statement
Aston Martin is therefore seeking a new team principal, but this does not mean that Adrian Newey is leaving the team. On the contrary, he remains deeply involved, as Lawrence Stroll emphasized in a statement released recently: “As executive chairman and majority shareholder, I want to reiterate that Adrian is my partner and a significant shareholder. He is Aston Martin’s technical director, and between us there is a genuine collaborative relationship founded on a shared vision for the company’s success. Here, we do things differently, and although we do not currently follow the traditional team principal structure seen elsewhere, it is a deliberate choice.”
“As the most successful engineer in the history of this sport, Adrian’s main focus is on strategic and technical leadership, an area in which he excels. He is supported by a highly qualified management team to ensure results across all aspects of operations, both at the Campus and on track,” the Canadian continued. “We are regularly approached by senior executives from other teams who wish to join Aston Martin, but in line with our policy, we do not comment on rumors and speculation.”
Jonathan Wheatley rumors
The final part of Stroll’s statement clearly refers to the potential arrival of Jonathan Wheatley, who recently left his role as team principal at Audi for personal reasons. It seems the British engineer did not fully settle in Switzerland, but it is unlikely he would have left without Aston Martin’s offer. This offer, however, demonstrates Adrian Newey’s great trust in Wheatley, with whom he previously worked at Red Bull. Newey will remain as team principal until the arrival of the former Audi boss, a process that will likely take months due to Wheatley being subject to gardening leave.
Based on the content of this recent organizational news, the coming months will be critical for Aston Martin’s long-term development. The synergy between Newey’s technical vision and a more traditional operational lead could be the missing piece of the puzzle Lawrence Stroll has been building toward since taking over the team.
