The FIA’s recent ADUO decision established the Red Bull Ford internal combustion engine (ICE) as the performance benchmark, an outcome that has thoroughly surprised a large portion of the paddock. Naturally, the key players involved were the first to react. During the Barcelona press conference, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff couldn’t resist making a few jokes about the situation, noting that “being so far behind represents a challenge for us.” Meanwhile, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies is refusing to just accept the ruling and is actively awaiting formal explanations from the FIA.
The reaction within the Milton Keynes squad has been one of intense surprise, particularly because this measurement denies them the power unit development “tokens” for the current season. Although the margins for securing significant revisions to the analysis appear slim, Laurent Mekies—who notably has past experience working within the Federation—wants a clear and transparent breakdown of the data.
“We received some preliminary information from the FIA which, in truth, did more than just surprise us,” Mekies commented in statements reported by AUTOhebdo. “We are currently in discussions with them so that they can complete their analysis in the most precise way possible.”
“We respect the process and we await the verdict. We opened our doors and provided every possible element to ensure that the FIA could reach a clear conclusion. When you have preliminary results that contradict all existing performance indicators, it is only proper to redo or complete the analysis as thoroughly as possible,” the Frenchman added.
This ongoing dispute underscores the high stakes of engine equalization and development regulations in modern Formula 1. As Red Bull pushes for a meticulous review of the FIA’s metrics, the final resolution of this analysis could have a significant impact on the competitive balance and power unit progression for the rest of the season.
