Formula 1 is back on track, and with it returns one of the paddock’s most intriguing storylines of the season: the debate surrounding Giampiero Lambiase’s future role at McLaren from 2028 onward.
The move of Max Verstappen’s current race engineer to Zak Brown’s team was officially confirmed several weeks ago, but speculation continues over exactly what position the Italian-British engineer will ultimately hold within the Woking-based outfit.
McLaren has publicly stated that Giampiero Lambiase will effectively serve as a senior figure alongside Andrea Stella, with the Italian retaining the official title of team principal. However, current Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies remains convinced that Lambiase’s departure from Milton Keynes is being driven by the opportunity to eventually take over as the top decision-maker at the papaya squad.
One team principal on another
“It is certainly my belief that GP [Lambiase’s nickname] is going to McLaren to become team principal,” Laurent Mekies reiterated on Friday in Montreal, as reported by PlanetF1 correspondent Thomas Maher.
“That is what I told you at the time. Obviously, we had several conversations before he made the decision. Now, do not ask me whether it will happen. The timing is none of my business. I can only tell you the content of our conversations,” the French manager stated.
For now, the Formula 1 paddock can only wait — even if it may be a long one, stretching all the way to 2028 — to see how McLaren’s leadership structure ultimately evolves once Giampiero Lambiase officially becomes part of the team.
Laurent Mekies’ persistent comments surrounding Giampiero Lambiase’s future team principal prospects add a fascinating layer of political intrigue to the ongoing developmental battle between Red Bull and McLaren. While the Woking-based squad continues to publicly back Andrea Stella’s current leadership structure, the temptation of handing an elite operational mind like Lambiase full executive control could easily reshape their long-term technical hierarchy. Navigating a multi-year transition phase is always a delicate balancing act in modern Formula 1, especially when it involves headhunting a core pillar of a championship-winning garage environment. If Mekies’ inside knowledge proves accurate, Lambiase’s eventual arrival in 2028 will not just strengthen McLaren’s engineering capabilities, but completely redefine their trackside leadership strategy as they look to cement their position at the absolute sharp end of the grid.
