After Christian Horner’s departure, Laurent Mekies has stepped into the role of Team Principal at Red Bull. The Frenchman, who previously worked with Racing Bulls, already had established ties with the Milton Keynes-based team. Laurent Mekies and Horner have very different personalities, and this contrast is evident in how Red Bull now interacts with other Formula 1 teams.
Even Zak Brown previously commented on what F1 might look like without Horner. The Englishman was a strong character within the circus, and his political battles often created adversaries across the paddock. In this regard, Mekies represents a more moderate and diplomatic figure.
Red Bull’s evolving relationship with rivals
According to Laurent Mekies himself, Red Bull under his leadership aims for healthier and more constructive relationships with other Formula 1 teams. Discussions within the F1 Commission about the sport’s future and potential regulatory changes now benefit from a more collaborative approach.
Laurent Mekies explained: “On-track competition is one aspect. Discussing the future of this sport together and making key decisions is a normal process among rivals, even if there are disagreements and everyone defends their own short-to-medium term interests. The truth is, we have an excellent relationship with Zak Brown, Andrea Stella, Toto Wolff, Fred Vasseur, and all the others.” With this statement, Laurent Mekies emphasizes his collaborative stance when engaging with other Team Principals.
The Frenchman also highlighted the importance of being aligned with the heads of other teams, a vision that contrasts with the approach of his predecessor at Red Bull: “I think the F1 Commission is fully aware that if we want the sport to reach its maximum potential, we need a group that can temporarily set aside its own short-to-medium term interests. This is essential for discussions with the FIA and for advancing Formula 1 in the right direction.” – the former Ferrari team member concluded.
