Fast laps and Red Bull tactics: McLaren must stay alert during the 2024 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, according to Lando Norris. The British driver does not want to fall into the trap of the additional point again, as happened at the end of the Marina Bay race. There’s nothing against Daniel Ricciardo, the Woking representative underscores, but the dynamic implemented by Milton Keynes cannot be tolerated again.
Regarding the “scandal” of the fastest lap, the FIA has also intervened. Starting next season, the infamous additional point for the fastest lap in the race will no longer be awarded. This point has often not rewarded excellence but has served as a strange safety net for drivers who performed poorly in the race.
The case of Singapore could not go unnoticed. While the “romantic” aspect of Daniel Ricciardo‘s last fastest lap in Formula 1 cannot be ignored, the evidence cannot be denied: the Australian snatched a valuable additional point from Lando Norris, favoring what is, in fact, his “parent” team.
“The circumstances in which it happened [in Singapore] were, I believe, unique,” the Brit explained in Austin. “Daniel [Ricciardo] knew it was his last race. If it hadn’t been and he had simply gone for the fastest lap, then it would have been a bit more questionable, and I think as a team we would have asked for more explanations.” – he pointed out.
“I know they are changing the rules for next year regarding this kind of thing, but if it were a repeated occurrence, if it were to happen again this weekend or next, then I think it would be a much bigger question mark. If it were a case like Singapore or something repeated, I think it’s the right thing to do [to remove it].” – Lando Norris concluded ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend.
