F1 | Abu Dhabi GP – Norris keeps calm at Yas Marina: the surprising serenity of the McLaren driver
Aware that he has “much more to lose” than his rivals, Lando Norris has decided to maintain a calm and focused approach heading into the final championship decider at Abu Dhabi. Once again, in the history of Formula 1, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix promises to be decisive in determining the World Champion between Norris, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri. After a disappointing performance in Qatar, Norris appeared composed, confident, and focused, despite the immense pressure awaiting him in his last weekend at Yas Marina.
In the press conference, the McLaren driver stated that he does not plan to change his approach for this crucial race, while acknowledging that, as the championship leader, he has “much more to lose” than his direct rivals.
The calmness of Lando Norris: strategy or truth?
“It’s like every other weekend; nothing changes. Naturally, after each race weekend, we review what happened, looking at what clearly and obviously didn’t go well for us, some of the mistakes we made, even the less obvious things that we could improve on. That’s normal after a race, and then you prepare for the next one,” Norris explained.
“Beyond that, nothing changes; everyone within the team approaches it in the same way. I think it’s more exciting for everyone at the same time. Apart from that, the work and the approach remain the same.”
“I imagine, in terms of position, I obviously have more to lose because I’m at the top. I’ll do my best to stay there until the end of the year.”
Looking ahead if the championship slips away
Lando Norris also shared his thoughts on what could happen if he loses the championship to Verstappen or Piastri: “At the same time, if things don’t go as I’d like, I’ll try again next year. There will probably be some bitterness, but that’s life — we move on and try to do better next season.”
“I also have a feeling that I have nothing to lose because it’s just one race, one championship, but in 30 years, I probably won’t think too much about it either way.”
Whether the serenity is genuine or the most sophisticated form of pressure management, it is working. Lando Norris heads into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend looking every bit the driver who believes the crown is already his to lose – and completely at peace with that reality.
