Another trophy on the horizon?
Lando Norris is the man of the moment in Great Britain. His first Formula 1 World Championship, secured with just two points of advantage over Max Verstappen, has delighted the entire United Kingdom. The country now celebrates a new British world champion in F1, five years after the last title won by Lewis Hamilton.
Now Lando Norris is also in contention for another recognition, one that is highly prestigious and deeply valued: the McLaren driver has been named among the six finalists for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award, an honor awarded annually by the British public broadcaster.
The voting will take place during the awards ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, 18 December. On that evening, Lando Norris will “compete” against darts player Luke Littler, golfer Rory McIlroy, England footballers Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kemp, and rugby player Ellie Kildunne.
Illustrious predecessors
British Formula 1 drivers have a long and successful history with this award: Lewis Hamilton, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell have each won the accolade twice. Going even further back, the trophy was also claimed by Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss and John Surtees — although Surtees received it for his achievements as a motorcycle world champion.
The award is presented to the British athlete who, according to the public vote, has achieved the most outstanding results during the year.
Tune in on 18 December to see if the new king of Formula 1 can add another iconic trophy to his rapidly growing collection.
