Lando Norris did not seem overly affected by the reaction of the Mexican fans, who are still upset over a team order favoring his teammate during the Italian Grand Prix.
The crowd against Lando
After dominating the Mexican Grand Prix—winning by a margin of 30 seconds over the second-place finisher—and reclaiming the championship lead, Lando Norris was surprisingly met with boos from the local fans during the traditional post-race interviews at the Foro Sol. The reaction was notably vocal, signaling that the audience had not forgiven the events of Monza.
During the press conference, Mexican journalist Carlos Jalife from Fast Mag explained the reasons behind the boos. Fans had not forgotten the Monza team order: after a slow pit stop that allowed Oscar Piastri to pass him, Norris was instructed to give the position back to the Australian by the McLaren team. According to a survey conducted by the local magazine, some fans believe Norris should “return” those three points to Oscar Piastri to even the score.
The Monza incident
Lando Norris, however, seemed unconcerned by the crowd’s disapproval. “People can do what they want, honestly. They have the right to boo if they wish. I think that’s just part of sports sometimes. I don’t know why, but when they boo me, I can’t help but laugh. Maybe it makes it more fun for me. They can keep doing it if they want. Obviously, I don’t wish for it—I prefer the cheers—but that’s how it is.”
Regarding the Monza events, Lando Norris reaffirmed that he believed he earned his second place on track. “As a team, we try to do things correctly. It’s the same as what happened last season in Budapest, when I could have won the race but had to let Oscar pass and take a deserved win. It’s no different. The decision to let him return to the lead was a team error. If they want those three points, they can have them. They have the right to think whatever they want. But just as Oscar deserved the win in Budapest, I deserved to be ahead in Monza. It’s simple.”
