Not the best Friday for McLaren: Lando Norris explains what needs to be addressed ahead of Saturday at the Canadian GP.
Based on what was seen in the first two free practice sessions, it’s hard to predict how the weekend in Montreal will unfold. In Canada, even McLaren showed it could be human, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri having to deal with some issues linked in part to the new upgrade package.
The team led by Andrea Stella brought a new front wing to the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, but it didn’t fully convince the two drivers. Especially in FP1, the car that has been dominating the championship showed some difficulty in finding the right balance, a situation that improved in the afternoon. McLaren’s engineers will now have to decide whether to continue with the new configuration or revert to the one used so far this season.
Lando Norris sums up after Friday in Montreal
At the end of Friday in Canada, Lando Norris took stock of the situation at McLaren, highlighting the areas that need improvement.
“We need to be able to extract a bit more from the car. We’re more or less all in the same boat – the track isn’t in great condition – but yes, it was definitely the toughest Friday of the season. Maybe not the worst in terms of pace, but certainly the hardest when it came to putting a lap together. We have to find a way to make the car easier to drive,” said the number 4.
“As for the updates, there’s not a big difference compared to the previous package. Obviously, it will take a few races to evaluate their impact. This track is quite atypical, with the curbs and the low grip levels. Of course, we’ll work on fixing a few things, with the aim of extracting a bit more speed. Throughout the whole session, I managed to complete only one good lap,” the Briton added.
