Lando Norris on F1 title: Why making family happy matters more than beating Max Verstappen. Lando Norris shares his perspective on becoming F1 world champion.

Lando Norris, 2025 F1

In his seventh year in Formula 1, Lando Norris has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the 35th driver to be recorded in the championship’s winners’ list. This success is certainly due to a lightning-fast McLaren, but also to the Englishman’s technical and mental growth, which allowed him to show greater determination and clarity at the most crucial moment compared to 2024.

Norris wants to be a different kind of champion

From his earliest reactions, Lando Norris has made it clear that he wants to be—and be perceived as—a different kind of champion compared to Max Verstappen. The new world champion isn’t driven by the desire to dominate or crush his rivals. Aggression isn’t his natural trait, and he doesn’t seek to surround himself with people focused on confrontation or provocation.

His words

Lando Norris defines his championship differently. His motivation isn’t the fierce competition on track but the love and support from the people who matter most to him. He explained: “My motivation isn’t to prove I’m better than anyone else. I’m not going to wake up saying, ‘I’m happy because I beat Max.’ Honestly, deep down, I don’t care. Just as I don’t care if every article questions whether Oscar or Max are stronger or weaker than me.”

“I just did what I had to do to win the championship and made my loved ones happy: at the end of the day, that’s all that matters to me. I’m world champion, and that makes me smile, but it’s not what makes me wake up happy. All I need is for my family and friends to be happy.”

This perspective marks a significant shift in the typical “champion’s psyche” often seen in the paddock. While his predecessor focused on total dominance, Lando Norris seems to prioritize emotional fulfillment and stability. As he prepares to defend his title in 2026, the question remains whether this “gentle” approach can withstand the pressure of being the man everyone is trying to hunt down. For now, however, the boy from Bristol is content with his trophy and, more importantly, his peace of mind.
