From a seemingly closed Formula 1 championship to a suddenly reopened battle, McLaren’s mistake in Las Vegas has sent shockwaves through the drivers’ standings, putting immense pressure back on Lando Norris. Red Bull’s clever “update” has energized Max Verstappen, giving the championship fight a new twist.
Initially, Lando Norris celebrated a strong result in Las Vegas, finishing behind Max Verstappen with a big smile after crossing the line. The taste of the American flag at the finish seemed like a step toward the world championship. However, the joy was short-lived. A major error by the McLaren team led to the disqualification of both McLaren drivers, wiping out their points and reopening the title fight. Red Bull seized the moment, leveraging social media to highlight their renewed championship chances and Max Verstappen’s momentum.
World championship standings shaken up
- Lando Norris, McLaren – 390 points
- Oscar Piastri, McLaren – 366 points (-24)
- Max Verstappen, Red Bull – 366 points (-24)
Skid wear, the abrasion on the plank underneath the car, is a delicate factor in F1, and mismanagement can compromise not just a race weekend but the entire championship. Lando Norris’s second-place finish in Las Vegas had briefly put him in a commanding position in the title race. While the mathematical certainty was not yet guaranteed, a 30-point lead would have allowed the British driver to approach the final races of the season with some margin for control.
However, the post-race surprise came swiftly. FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer flagged both McLaren cars for excessive skid plank wear. The decision was immediate, with McLaren’s Woking team summoned to the stewards. The outcome was almost automatic: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix, losing all points earned in the race.
Red Bull capitalizes on the situation
Red Bull quickly leveraged the drama to their advantage on social media. The Milton Keynes-based team highlighted the updated drivers’ standings with a playful caption: “Du du du du intensifies.” They also updated their profile description, adding a popcorn emoji and reminding fans that the championship “is still open.” Max Verstappen now closes in on his rivals decisively, turning up the pressure to unprecedented levels.
Lando Norris faces renewed pressure
The lead-up to the Qatar Grand Prix has now changed dramatically for Lando Norris. He can no longer approach the weekend with a relaxed strategy or rely on managing his points advantage. The zero points from Las Vegas put Max Verstappen back into contention, and the gap to bridge is now smaller than a single race’s worth of points. Norris, who has occasionally shown mental fragility under pressure, must now handle the sudden surge of tension and protect his 24-point lead over his closest rivals.
Oscar Piastri still has championship hopes
Despite his disqualification, Oscar Piastri retains hope for the world championship. The Australian driver, who led the standings for much of the season, struggled after the summer break, losing momentum and swapping roles with his teammate Norris. For Piastri, the Las Vegas disqualification could serve as a last-minute catalyst, giving him renewed motivation as the title fight intensifies between Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
From champagne-ready to championship panic in the space of a few hours – welcome to the wildest title fight finish in years. Qatar can’t come soon enough.
