Lando Norris faces difficult lesson after three costly F1 weekends as McLaren looks to 2027

Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, 2025 F1

Lando Norris has endured three disappointing Formula 1 weekends in Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore, with a series of mistakes and McLaren’s declining competitiveness bringing an abrupt end to the momentum he had established earlier in the 2026 season. The reigning world champion now faces an important challenge: learning from those setbacks while preparing for a potential return to championship contention in 2027.

The 2026 campaign was supposed to confirm Lando Norris’s progress after his maiden Drivers’ Championship triumph in 2025. The British driver had demonstrated greater maturity and mental resilience, delivering impressive performances even when McLaren did not have the strongest car. However, the situation changed dramatically following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, leaving both the driver and his team searching for answers.

Lando Norris struggles after promising start to 2026 F1 season

After winning the world championship in 2025, Lando Norris entered the new season with a different level of confidence and experience. His performances during the opening races were generally excellent, particularly given that the McLaren MCL40 was not always competitive enough to challenge for victory.

Victories in Hungary and the Netherlands reinforced the impression that the British driver had taken another step forward. His ability to maximise results, even when the car was not the fastest on the grid, appeared to demonstrate the maturity expected of a reigning world champion.

Yet the positive trend began to unravel at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. McLaren introduced an important upgrade package at Baku, but the changes did not fully meet Lando Norris’s expectations. From that weekend onwards, his performances became noticeably less convincing, with mistakes, reduced competitiveness and some unfortunate incidents contributing to a difficult sequence of results.

The following events in Malaysia and Singapore only deepened those concerns. Lando Norris appeared less decisive in wheel-to-wheel situations and struggled to reproduce the speed and consistency that had characterised his strongest performances earlier in the year.

Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore: three races Lando Norris will want to forget

The Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid had provided Lando Norris with one of his last outstanding performances of the season. He delivered an excellent drive and came close to securing another victory, making the subsequent decline particularly unexpected.

At Baku, McLaren arrived with significant technical developments for the MCL40, but Lando Norris was not entirely comfortable with the updated package. The weekend became increasingly difficult after an unforced error at Turn 1, before his race eventually ended following contact involving the two Alpine cars.

Although that collision was not considered his fault, the British driver had already been running towards the back of the field and lacked the race pace shown by teammate Oscar Piastri. The contrast between the two McLaren drivers made the disappointing performance even more apparent.

Understandably frustrated after the incident caused by Franco Colapinto in Azerbaijan, Lando Norris travelled to Malaysia determined to respond with a strong performance just one week later. However, the Sepang weekend brought further disappointment rather than the recovery he had hoped for.

Another mistake occurred when Lando Norris ran wide under Safety Car conditions after a momentary lapse in concentration. More importantly, the overall result demonstrated that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull were clearly more competitive than McLaren at that circuit.

The three-race sequence concluded in Singapore, a venue where Lando Norris had previously produced memorable performances. In 2023, he played an important supporting role in Carlos Sainz’s victory, while the 2024 edition featured a commanding performance from the McLaren driver from start to finish.

However, the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix weekend failed to reproduce those earlier successes. McLaren lacked the final margin of speed needed to compete for the leading positions, and the situation was made worse by another costly incident involving its two drivers.

Singapore Sprint clash with Oscar Piastri adds to McLaren frustration

During a chaotic Sprint race at Marina Bay, Lando Norris attempted to overtake teammate Oscar Piastri on the final lap. The two McLaren cars made contact while fighting for fifth position, creating further tension within the team during an already challenging period.

The attempted overtake was particularly controversial because it involved a relatively modest position in a Sprint race rather than a potential Grand Prix victory. From a risk-management perspective, the decision raised questions about whether the reigning world champion had shown sufficient judgement in a situation involving his teammate.

For Lando Norris, it represented a third significant mistake across three consecutive race weekends. Combined with his earlier difficulties in Azerbaijan and Malaysia, the Singapore incident reinforced concerns that his confidence and decision-making had deteriorated.

His performance in Sunday’s Grand Prix was not necessarily poor, but it did little to change the overall assessment of a disappointing run of races. McLaren’s lack of outright competitiveness remained another important factor, demonstrating that the team’s difficulties could not be attributed solely to its lead driver.

Why Lando Norris is already looking towards the 2027 F1 season

It is disappointing that a season which began so positively has developed into such a difficult period for Lando Norris. Nevertheless, his 2026 campaign should not be judged exclusively on the results of the Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore Grands Prix.

The British driver has produced several excellent performances throughout the year, often achieving strong results when McLaren was far from being the leading team. Those earlier achievements remain evidence of the progress he has made since becoming a Formula 1 world champion.

That is one reason why attention is increasingly turning towards the 2027 championship. Lando Norris has already achieved the career-defining objective of winning a Drivers’ Championship, and the success of 2025 removed an enormous psychological burden. His performances during the opening stages of 2026 demonstrated that he could continue competing at a high level without the same pressure to prove himself.

Despite his recent difficulties, Lando Norris remains 62 points ahead of Oscar Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship following the Singapore Grand Prix. That advantage highlights the broader strength of his season and provides important context when evaluating the recent setbacks.

Although McLaren still has significant objectives in the Constructors’ Championship, the prospect of beginning 2027 with a more competitive package is likely to become an increasingly important consideration for both the team and its reigning champion.

Learning from mistakes could be key to Lando Norris’s next championship challenge

Lando Norris has repeatedly expressed confidence in McLaren, even during periods when the team’s results have fallen short of expectations. That relationship will be particularly important as the British outfit evaluates the lessons of 2026 and prepares for another attempt to fight at the front.

While the MCL40 has not consistently provided the performance needed to win races, the difficulties of the current campaign do not necessarily mean McLaren will encounter the same problems in 2027. The team will have an opportunity to reassess its technical direction, while Lando Norris must examine the mistakes that have characterised his recent weekends.

A world champion is not defined by an absence of errors, but by the ability to recognise them and respond constructively. The incidents in Baku, Sepang and Singapore have exposed weaknesses that Lando Norris will need to address if he wants to challenge for another title.

With the final races of the 2026 Formula 1 season still ahead, the immediate objective remains to finish the championship positively. Beyond that, the challenge is to enter 2027 with renewed confidence, improved judgement and a McLaren capable of fighting consistently for victories.

Lando Norris has already demonstrated that he possesses the speed and determination required to become a Formula 1 world champion. If he can put the disappointment of Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Singapore behind him, learn from those experiences and approach the next season with a positive mindset, another successful championship campaign remains a realistic possibility.
