It may sound strange to say about a driver who once made qualifying performance one of his strongest suits, but the last time the Briton secured pole position was all the way back at the first weekend of the season in Australia.
Since then, the McLaren driver has often struggled to extract the car’s full potential over a single lap, making mistakes and small errors that cost him not only winnable opportunities but also valuable points in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Friday’s analysis revealed a crucial factor, one that matters more in Monaco than anywhere else: taking risks in qualifying would be essential, because pushing the limits in the Principality often yields precious tenths of a second. At the same time, though, completing a clean lap with no mistakes would be just as fundamental—something Lando Norris had failed to do the day before.
That’s precisely what made the difference today: his ability to deliver a fast but clean lap without visible mistakes. Lando Norris himself highlighted this after qualifying:
“It’s been a while, I feel good. I’ve been struggling in qualifying the last few months. Monaco is a special place, maybe the hardest one to get pole at, and doing it against the home hero [Leclerc] makes it even better. I’m really proud of the whole team for achieving a day like this.”
The smile returned not only for the pole but also because, after so many qualifying sessions where he couldn’t find that final step to reach the top, Lando Norris finally put himself ahead of everyone—on a track where this matters more than ever for the race.
The fact that he still had a few tenths in hand became clear after his first Q3 attempt, when he significantly improved his sector times, showing the kind of leap between runs that has often defined him. It was no easy feat—beating Charles Leclerc on home turf isn’t something just anyone can do.
“That’s the challenge: to keep finding time because everyone else is improving and you need to take more risks. But when you get to the final lap in Q3, you can push more, and it was really a great lap. Clean, well put together… it’s a great feeling when you cross the line and know the effort paid off. I’m very happy.”
At the end of Q3, McLaren opted for two runs on the same set of tyres. It was a calculated decision, especially as the soft compound had shown the ability to deliver multiple quick laps. On a circuit where confidence and fine-tuning are vital, this clearly helped in the key moment.
“It wasn’t a risk for us. We thought it was the right choice even before qualifying, and we stuck to that. The team did an amazing job, because days like this don’t come easily.”
