Norris: “Papaya rules didn’t help Max catch up”

Max Verstappen’s gap in the Drivers’ Championship is now 36 points. After Zandvoort, it was 104

McLaren, Norris defends the papaya rules
“The papaya rules are Verstappen’s best ally,” said Günther Steiner, reflecting the view of part of the paddock and observers, but not that of Lando Norris. Although it is clear that two race-winning drivers can take points from each other, the British driver believes that McLaren’s “choice not to choose” was the right one and will ultimately be successful.

Norris’s words
“I don’t think they helped Verstappen catch up, and I don’t think they ever hurt us. People can always say what they want and form their own opinions,” Norris told Sky Sports UK.

“This year we won the Constructors’ Championship early precisely because we have two drivers who are strong. Red Bull is fighting for the Drivers’ Championship, but they don’t have a second driver who can compete and support him. There are many things we do very well but don’t get praised for. But we’ll keep going…”

Max’s gap
With four race weekends remaining, Max Verstappen is 36 points from the top. Even though McLaren won in Mexico with the new championship leader, the Dutch driver’s form remains very strong, forcing the papaya team to avoid any mistakes. Next comes Interlagos, where in 2024 he suffered a major psychological blow from Super Max himself.
