Lando Norris has defended McLaren’s handling of the now well-known “papaya rules,” a topic that has become central to discussions around the team’s management and internal balance.
The debate over McLaren’s “papaya rules” first emerged last season, when Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri found themselves battling for race victories. Much of the discussion focused on how team principal Andrea Stella managed the situation, with some critics suggesting that his approach was too lenient in certain circumstances.
However, in the end, what truly matters are the results — and in that regard, the track has proved the former Ferrari engineer right. The Woking-based team secured the Constructors’ Championship well in advance, and both of its drivers currently occupy the top two positions in the Drivers’ standings.
Norris defends his team from criticism
For this reason, the heavy criticism aimed at the “papaya team” seems rather misplaced, as Lando Norris recently confirmed. “I don’t think it’s the fault of the so-called ‘papaya rules’ that Max Verstappen has managed to recover so many points in the championship. It’s not something that has harmed us, despite what people might think,” the British driver stated.
“People tend to forget that we won the Constructors’ title with a comfortable margin. And if we achieved that, it’s because both Oscar and I have been performing at an exceptional level. If we look at Red Bull, they only have Max. Their second driver is struggling. As for the criticism, we’ll just keep doing things the way we always have,” Lando Norris added.
