Bitter laughter for Norris
Among the post-race interviews after the Japanese Grand Prix, one of Lando Norris’s comments to Viaplay stood out, addressing the new Formula 1 regulations and potential rule changes the FIA has suggested might be implemented starting in Miami. The reigning world champion appeared skeptical about any meaningful adjustments, bitterly stating: “It doesn’t make sense to say what I’d like to see changed. It doesn’t matter what we drivers say. As long as the fans are having fun, that’s what counts, right?” the McLaren driver emphasized with sarcasm.
When the interviewer asked whether the drivers should also enjoy themselves, Norris cut straight to the point: “Clearly not.”
Positive signals from McLaren
Speaking to Sky Sports UK, Lando Norris broadened his analysis to his fifth-place finish at Suzuka: “Did I enjoy it? You probably shouldn’t start with that question! Oscar and I had a great start, and it was nice to be first and third initially. There are many positive signs from our team that allowed us to achieve such a significant result, even though we know we still have many gaps. Finishing second and fifth is a solid outcome and gives us good momentum to keep working.”
Power unit progress and team optimism
Norris also acknowledged progress on the Mercedes power unit: “Obviously, we’ve gained some improvements both on the battery side and the engine side. Other areas remain problematic—both Oscar and I have raised the same concerns about the car and its challenges. However, we know we’re heading in the right direction, and that’s a great start.”
With his fifth-place finish at Suzuka, Lando Norris currently sits fifth in the drivers’ championship with 25 points, 47 points behind the leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
