The red flag undoubtedly penalized Lando Norris’s race at the 4.309-kilometre Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Brazil. The Englishman had already made his pit stop and found himself “screwed.”
The McLaren driver criticized the rule that allows tire changes during a red flag situation. This enabled Max Verstappen, along with other drivers, to have a “free” stop and gain valuable positions.
No wrong choices by McLaren
In post-race interviews, Lando Norris, who is still under the threat of a possible penalty, defended McLaren’s decision to pit. At that moment, it was difficult to anticipate a race interruption.
“It’s possible to change tires under a red flag, as others did, so it was just luck,” the Englishman explained. “Sometimes things go one way.” – the British driver pointed out at the end of the Brazilian Grand Prix – “We didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t care what people say; staying out was not the right thing to do. There shouldn’t have been a red flag, but obviously, in the end, there was the incident that caused it. That’s life. They took a gamble, and it paid off. It’s not talent; it’s just luck. Just a bit of bad luck for us.”
Mistakes during the race for the McLaren driver
Continuing his analysis of the Brazilian GP, aside from the red flag, Lando Norris admitted that he was far from perfect: “I still made a couple of mistakes. In the end, I had cars on my left and right. I locked up the rear wheels, went wide, and lost two positions. A bit of bad luck, but it was all my fault. It wasn’t a perfect race for me. But I believe that, regardless of everything, fourth place was the best we could do today among those who pitted and weren’t lucky. But for the rest, we’ll keep our heads down.” – the McLaren man concluded.
