Lance Stroll unmoved after finally finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso in qualifying
Aston Martin endured one of its most difficult qualifying sessions of the season in Barcelona, with the team’s disappointing performance creating headlines for all the wrong reasons.
The struggling AMR26 locked out the back row of the grid, delivering a painful result for a team that had hoped to make progress during the 2026 Formula 1 campaign. The outcome was particularly significant for Fernando Alonso, who suffered an unwanted first in his remarkable Formula 1 career by finishing last in a qualifying session for the first time.
Adding to the disappointment for the Spanish driver was the fact that Lance Stroll finished ahead of him. It marked the first time since the 2024 British Grand Prix at Silverstone that the Canadian had beaten Alonso in an internal qualifying battle, ending an extraordinary streak of 42 consecutive Grands Prix in which the two-time world champion had dominated the head-to-head comparison.

Despite the disappointing result, Fernando Alonso reacted in characteristic fashion after qualifying by highlighting Lance Stroll’s performance rather than focusing on his own setback.
The Spaniard praised his teammate and argued that Stroll is often underestimated within the Formula 1 paddock. Alonso pointed out that in previous seasons the Canadian had frequently been very close to four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, evidence that his performances are sometimes overlooked.
For Alonso, the result was not simply about losing an internal battle, but rather another reflection of the difficult situation Aston Martin currently finds itself in.
Lance Stroll was not interested in the statistic
While many observers viewed the end of Alonso’s qualifying streak as a noteworthy talking point, Lance Stroll appeared completely uninterested when questioned by reporters.
Asked whether there was any satisfaction in finally finishing ahead of Fernando Alonso, and whether he would have preferred to do so in a more competitive position on the grid, the Canadian gave a brutally direct response “I don’t care. I don’t know. I don’t give a damn.”
The reaction reflected the frustration currently surrounding Aston Martin’s performances. With both drivers stuck at the back of the field, personal milestones carry little significance when the team is unable to compete where it wants to be.
Aston Martin’s problems remain severe
When asked about the car itself, Lance Stroll was more willing to explain the issues that continue to affect Aston Martin’s competitiveness.
According to the Canadian, the AMR26 still suffers from major handling limitations that become even more evident on a demanding circuit such as Barcelona: “We still have handling problems. We have very little downforce, and that is especially noticeable on a track like this one. On top of that, we don’t have the power we need.”
Those comments paint a worrying picture for Aston Martin heading into the remainder of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend. Barcelona is traditionally considered one of the best circuits for exposing a car’s aerodynamic weaknesses, and the team’s lack of performance suggests there is still significant work to do.
For now, neither Lance Stroll nor Fernando Alonso appear to have much reason for optimism. While one qualifying streak has finally come to an end, Aston Martin’s larger concerns remain firmly unresolved as the team continues to search for answers with the AMR26.
