Andrea Kimi Antonelli is not only the new face of Mercedes, but also the leader rewriting the hierarchy of Formula 1 in 2026. Behind the crystal-clear talent of the 19-year-old from Bologna lies an unexpected family background story, marked by a father’s concerns and determined protection. The transition from karting to single-seaters was far from straightforward: the shadow of a racing driver father like Marco initially acted as a form of loving restraint, before eventually becoming the driving force behind his success.
The fear of the darker side of racing
Growing up in an environment where motorsport is “bread and engines” can be a blessing, but for today’s F1 star it initially represented an obstacle. Marco Antonelli, a central figure in the paddock and the driving force behind Antonelli Motorsport, knew all too well the risks and disappointments hidden behind the chequered flag.
In a recent confession to the BBC, the teammate of George Russell admitted that his father was not at all enthusiastic about him following in his footsteps. “To be honest, at first my father was against my racing career. He knows very well how wonderful this environment can be, and at the same time how ruthless it is. Having experienced those difficulties himself, he was trying to spare me certain disappointments. His was a protective shield; he did not want me to be broken by the inevitable obstacles of racing,” explained the championship leader.
This resistance did not come from a lack of trust, but from a protective instinct aimed at sparing his son the brutality of a sport that makes no concessions to anyone, especially in difficult moments.
The Minardi breakthrough and Toto’s phone call
Despite the initial reservations, Kimi’s passion broke through every barrier, transforming his father’s concern into full support. There was no real rebellion, but rather a display of strength and determination that convinced Marco of the validity of his son’s path.
“My father quickly understood that this was not a simple infatuation, but a deep desire. There was no need to beg him; my determination convinced him that my destiny was behind the wheel,” the F1 talent recalled.
The turning point in the 19-year-old’s career came when the Minardi family decided to recommend his profile to Toto Wolff. From that moment, events accelerated rapidly: the arrival of Gwen Lagrue to monitor him, and eventually his entry into the Mercedes Junior Academy in 2017.
“The breakthrough came thanks to Minardi, who forwarded my name to Toto Wolff. From there, Mercedes’ interest began, along with the arrival of Gwen Lagrue. I will never forget that phone call from Toto: I was in the car with my father at the time. It was a magical moment for both of us as we realised my life was about to change.”
A full circle completed inside a Silver Arrow, under the proud eyes of the man who once wanted to keep him away from the asphalt.
