F1 | Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli has seven races to prove himself
After a promising start and a difficult summer, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has regained confidence at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Now, the young Italian faces seven decisive races to convince Mercedes and continue his journey in Formula 1.
Antonelli’s bright start to the season was overshadowed once Formula 1 entered European territory. Expectations were high for the young Bolognese driver, especially on tracks where he had already competed in junior categories. Yet, he managed to score only three championship points, which placed him in a negative spiral. The incident at Zandvoort involving Charles Leclerc further worsened his situation within the Mercedes team.
However, as often happens in motorsport, a strong performance was enough to silence doubts about his future. Some even speculated about a Sainz-Antonelli swap, but the Spanish driver promptly dismissed those rumors.
The solid showing in Azerbaijan not only allowed Antonelli to overtake Alexander Albon in the Drivers’ Championship but also placed him in a favorable position within the team. With his contract expiring in December 2025, the 19-year-old now has seven races to prove he deserves his seat. Meanwhile, Toto Wolff continues to nurture his young Mercedes driver.
Toto Wolff emphasizes open communication with Kimi Antonelli
In a past interview, the Austrian team principal stated that everyone at Brackley was aware that there would be challenging moments for the Italian and that these difficulties should not overshadow the evaluation of a driver who, at just 19 years old, is experiencing the demanding world of Formula 1 for the first time.
Kimi Antonelli’s performance in Baku brought back his smile. Despite a chaotic race and a track full of challenges, the 2006-born driver’s fourth place helped Mercedes overtake Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship.
“He recovered well after Monza. He had a really tough period during the European races, and finishing fourth and running at the front, in the leading group, is something to build on for more strong weekends until the end of the year,” Wolff told the media.
“We always speak directly with each other. Nothing is held back. I think something was missing at the end of some races that made the difference for a podium finish. But in the end, it was an excellent result.”
How Kimi Antonelli can secure his future with Mercedes
In the final seven races of the season, the Mercedes driver absolutely needs consistent points finishes. He must avoid overdriving, manage the car carefully, and wait for the right moment to attack, in order to prevent incidents similar to Zandvoort. His race management in Azerbaijan showed the approach of a driver still learning, but heading in the right direction.
Among the remaining tracks on the calendar, some could perfectly suit the strengths of the W16. Consider last year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix. Perhaps, in the final corners of this season, we could witness a flash of brilliance—a podium that reflects a challenging yet steadily rising trajectory.
