George Russell achieved his podium target for the Chinese GP after securing a front-row start in this second race of the 2025 F1 season.
While Oscar Piastri took victory, the battle for second place saw Lando Norris defending from a strong comeback by the #63 Mercedes, which had managed to stay close behind.
The Briton made no mistakes and, while holding third place firmly, tried to take advantage of a brake issue on his rival’s car in the final laps to close the gap. However, he wasn’t close enough to overtake and had to settle for a strong result, as he explained after taking off his helmet in parc fermé.
“It’s a great result to finish third, especially in front of these fans who have shown support from the start of the weekend,” said a smiling George Russell after stepping out of his W16.
“It was a great race, and we are happy with this podium because we knew McLaren had a bit more pace than us, so we secured valuable points.”
“Why only one stop? Contrary to expectations, I thought from the start that stopping just once would be the simpler strategy. In any case, the car performed really well this weekend—probably one of the best weekends I’ve had in F1 in terms of overall performance.”
“I’m very happy about that. I was able to give my maximum every time I was on track, and this podium is satisfying.” – the Mercedes man added – “A lonely race? Actually, Charles Leclerc put quite a bit of pressure on me for a few laps after his pit stop. Then there was the battle with Norris, but overall, it was a fairly straightforward race.” – the British driver concluded.
