The mistake made at Monza last September is now a distant memory. After an impressive performance in Australia, Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to impress, reaching Q3 for the first time in his career in Chinese GP qualifying despite some tire-related issues.
The Italian driver finished in eighth place, while his teammate, George Russell, will start from the front row. It’s a solid starting point for a Mercedes that continues to show strong qualifying speed and competitive race pace. Following the Shanghai Sprint, the Brackley-based team now sits at 34 points in the Constructors’ Championship, just one point behind McLaren.
Kimi Antonelli’s words after Shanghai qualifying
“I’m a bit disappointed to have finished eighth. We tried to change our approach on the out lap, but it was difficult to get the tires into the right window. I put in some good laps during qualifying, but I was missing something in Q3,” said the Mercedes driver.
“I’m still getting to know the car and gaining experience. These are all situations that help me grow and improve,” Kimi Antonelli added. “The car certainly performed well, and George showed our true potential. We have good pace and will try to gain some positions in the race,” concluded the number 12.
