In 2025, there will be many changes on the grid in terms of drivers. In particular, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has allowed Kimi Antonelli to make his F1 debut with Mercedes. The Bolognese driver was asked whether he felt overshadowed by this major change at Ferrari, so let’s see his opinion.
The new Mercedes race driver did not hide, in an interview a few months ago, his past as a Ferrari fan. He admitted that during the Lewis Hamilton – Sebastian Vettel rivalry, he sided with the German.
Despite this, he is now preparing to hit the track with the team that was Ferrari’s rival for years. The Bolognese driver acknowledged Ferrari’s importance in Italy but also highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding his entry into F1.
“Fans have a really strong passion for Ferrari. But I think they are very excited about a good Italian driver. There is already a lot of buzz around.” Kimi Antonelli then added: “There is such positive energy, and I can’t wait to race, especially in my two home races [Imola and Monza, ed.]. Do I feel overshadowed by Hamilton and Ferrari? To be honest, no, but we’ll see how things go.”
Kimi Antonelli ahead of his debut
Kimi will take to the track with the new Mercedes W16 in Bahrain for testing, and then he will begin his first F1 season. The Bolognese driver stated that he does not have too many expectations for his debut. “Surely, one thing I really want to do is start with a good rhythm and try to build on that and be consistent.”
Kimi Antonelli concluded by clarifying: “But at the same time, you have to be realistic. Because the level is super competitive. So I will just try to focus on myself and work well with George Russell and the team.”
