After a promising start to the championship, Kimi Antonelli endured a challenging European race stretch, dealing with technical issues, qualifying errors, and on-track collisions that fueled questions about his future in the team.
The official announcement of his contract extension through 2026, communicated by Mercedes on Wednesday, comes as a welcome but not guaranteed confirmation. The decision strengthens Kimi Antonelli’s development path alongside teammate George Russell and highlights the team’s confidence in his long-term potential.
“Doubts come at certain moments”
“The team has always been clear about its plans, so I wasn’t truly worried, but it’s always reassuring to receive confirmation,” Kimi Antonelli explained. “Especially during difficult periods, doubts start to creep in. But Mercedes has always been very supportive and made it clear they want to continue with me.”
The Bolognese driver described how the European phase — marked by incidents in Monaco and Austria, and contact at Silverstone — challenged him mentally: “With all the highs and lows, it’s easy to start wondering if you’re really up to the task.” – the Italian pointed out ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend.
Looking forward with renewed confidence
With the new contract secured, Kimi Antonelli can now focus on the future: “I know I have my seat for next year, and that brings relief. But in 2026 I won’t be able to afford any lapses in form. I’ll need to give my best, especially with the new technical regulations coming.”
The Brackley team’s trust, combined with his renewed sense of calm, suggests that the upcoming season will not only be a confirmation for Antonelli but also a turning point in his Formula 1 career.
