Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari has dominated the headlines this winter break, especially with the various tests that saw the Briton drive the red car for the first time as a Scuderia Ferrari driver.
It is hard to say whether this has eased the pressure on the driver who will take the seat vacated by the seven-time world champion at Mercedes—Andrea Kimi Antonelli—because even away from the spotlight, expectations for one of the most highly regarded young talents remain high.
Moreover, the first person eager to showcase his talent is Kimi Antonelli himself, who does not need external pressure to understand his goals for this debut season in Formula 1. His aim is not just to grow but also to achieve some standout results. The young Italian has had several months to prepare for his F1 debut, through private tests with older cars and by completing FP1 sessions last year.
This preparation continues in early 2025, with further tests in “historic” cars over three years old, designed to bypass the newly imposed TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) restrictions and provide Kimi Antonelli with valuable track time ahead of his first race.
While these tests involve a car that is now over four years old and fundamentally different from the current ground-effect F1 cars, they offer a great opportunity to accumulate mileage and adapt to the extreme forces of an F1 car—especially the G-forces, which are difficult to replicate in the simulator.
In recent years, the new teammate of George Russell has risen through the ranks, demonstrating outstanding talent in every category he has competed in. His consistency convinced Mercedes to bring him directly into Formula 1 without an initial stint in a midfield team, a common approach for young drivers from junior academies.
Certainly, Lewis Hamilton’s departure created the perfect opportunity, but it also highlights how much the Silver Arrows believe in their new star, having followed his development closely since his karting days, long before he even stepped into a single-seater.
Comparisons with the driver he is replacing, especially in the UK, are inevitable, but Kimi Antonelli has joined Brackley to forge his own path and his own success, with the humility of someone who recognizes the challenge ahead while embracing its complexity.
“I feel like I’m simply a new Mercedes driver. Saying that I’m replacing Lewis Hamilton doesn’t feel right because Lewis is a huge figure in this sport and has achieved so much,” Kimi Antonelli told Sky Sports F1 when asked about stepping into Hamilton’s seat, given that the Briton wrote the most important chapters of his F1 career with Mercedes.
“I see myself as the next Mercedes driver, and I want to build my own path, striving to achieve great results and be successful.”
It is the right mindset for a driver who, while respecting Mercedes’ past and its dominant F1 history, aims to open a new chapter for the team and carve out his own legacy.
Meanwhile, Kimi Antonelli has also unveiled his new helmet for the 2025 season. The design is based on the one he used last year with Prema in Formula 2, with minor modifications and necessary adjustments to integrate the team’s sponsors. The Italian tricolor remains a prominent feature, alongside a touch of blue and four stars on the top of the helmet, complementing the number #12, which he has carried through the junior categories.
