Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli will start the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix from seventh on the grid after receiving a three-place penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags. The warning was triggered by Max Verstappen’s spin during the closing stages of Q3, just as the Mercedes driver was completing his final flying lap.
The Hungarian GP grid penalty for Andrea Kimi Antonelli makes his attempt to repeat the victory he claimed in Belgium one week earlier considerably more difficult. However, the Italian believes his qualifying lap had been quick enough for third place before the yellow flag disrupted his final attempt.
Kimi Antonelli faces a Hungarian GP recovery drive
At Spa-Francorchamps, Mercedes could rely on one of the strongest characteristics of its package: the performance of its power unit. The situation proved more complicated in Hungary, which was why Andrea Kimi Antonelli had deliberately avoided raising expectations before the Budapest weekend.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli had even placed himself among the outsiders, while expressing an even stronger desire to overturn those expectations at the Hungaroring.
Although the Bologna-born driver displayed highly encouraging race pace throughout free practice, extracting performance over a single lap appeared much more difficult for the Mercedes W17. Minor balance and tyre-temperature problems were never fully resolved, and those weaknesses carry a particularly heavy cost in Budapest.
Against that backdrop, the lap that initially secured fourth place before the penalties represented an outstanding performance. Mercedes’ speed over longer runs nevertheless offers encouragement, with the team believing its Hungarian Grand Prix race pace provides hope for Sunday.
Max Verstappen spin creates confusion at the end of Q3
It is difficult to determine whether Andrea Kimi Antonelli could have improved on fourth place, just over two tenths behind pole-sitter Lando Norris, because of the confusion that marked the final moments of Q3.
Max Verstappen spun at the entrance to the final corner, causing yellow flags to be displayed precisely as Andrea Kimi Antonelli was completing his flying lap. According to the Mercedes driver, the incident partially compromised his final attempt.
The disruption came at the end of a session in which Lando Norris ended Mercedes’ pole-position streak by securing first place for McLaren.
Kimi Antonelli believed his lap was quick enough for P3
Speaking to Sky Sport Formula 1 Italia after qualifying, before the three-place penalty had been imposed, Andrea Kimi Antonelli expressed some regret that he had been unable to achieve an even stronger result.
“I have to say that the lap was good enough for P3, one tenth slower than Lando Norris,” Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained. “At the final corner, when I saw the yellow flag caused by Max, I lifted off the accelerator. The warning caught me by surprise and was frustrating because it appeared just as I was about to take the corner, and I think I lost something there.”
Strong Mercedes race pace offers hope from seventh
Despite starting further down the order than expected, Andrea Kimi Antonelli can approach the 70-lap race at the Hungaroring with confidence. The Mercedes driver is well aware of the excellent race pace he demonstrated throughout the free practice sessions and therefore believes he has an opportunity to mount a major recovery.
The penalty leaves the championship leader with more work to do, but the revised 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix starting grid does not eliminate his prospects of fighting his way back towards the leading positions.
