In the end, Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished in sixth place in the Miami GP, which saw him as a great protagonist in qualifying but unlucky and disappointed in the race. After pole in the Sprint Qualifying, chaos in the short race followed, leading to a seventh-place finish, partly due to other drivers’ penalties. His stunning third place in yesterday’s Q3 was followed by a sixth-place finish today, which felt more like a consolation.
Problems with hard tires
Interviewed by Sky Sport F1 after the race, the Italian, who saw his teammate George Russell once again take the podium, emphasized that the issues arose during the second stint with the hard tires: “I must say that I felt much better with the medium tires than with the hard ones,” said the 18-year-old from Bologna. “In fact, at the end of the stint with the mediums, we were much closer to Max [Verstappen]. But after that, with the hards, I really struggled. Even with the balance, I couldn’t do what I wanted. Now we need to analyze and see what went wrong.” – Kimi Antonelli pointed out.
Race pace to improve
The final assessment is clear: there is still work to be done – both from the driver and the team – on race pace: “For sure, this weekend qualifying was a strong point,” the Italian concluded. “Because for the first time this year, I put the lap together much better. But it was a shame for the race, because I was definitely hoping for more. Let’s say that in qualifying and on the single lap we can be there, but compared to the McLarens today, the race pace was missing.”
