The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix weekend began with a slightly alarming sight: Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli appeared in the Suzuka paddock wearing a brace on his left hand. Fans and journalists quickly wondered if the injury would affect his ability to race. However, the young Italian immediately put those doubts to rest, reassuring everyone: “I’m fine and I can drive,” he confirmed, brushing aside any concerns about his condition.
An injury from Melbourne FP3
The hand brace is a precaution following a sprain sustained during his crash in Free Practice 3 at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Despite the impact, Antonelli clarified that the injury is not serious and poses no risk to his performance behind the wheel. “I only have a ligament sprain. The medical checks confirmed nothing is broken. I’m wearing the brace to help with the healing process,” he explained. He emphasized that driving the car does not require the brace, offering further reassurance: “I can drive without it, so there’s nothing to worry about.”
Confidence remains high after China victory
Antonelli’s incident in Melbourne occurred exiting Turn 2, where he lost control and hit the track limits heavily, causing the ligament sprain. Despite this, he still competed in qualifying and secured a second-place grid position, demonstrating his resilience and focus. Now at Suzuka, the Mercedes driver arrives confident, fresh from his impressive performance in the Chinese Grand Prix. He remains aware of his potential and is determined to replicate his success: “I know what I’m capable of achieving, and I’ll try to perform at my best here too, maybe even celebrate properly during the upcoming break.”
Looking ahead to Suzuka battle
Antonelli will face tough competition from George Russell and the Ferrari drivers as the Japanese GP unfolds. His physical condition, combined with the experience gained in China, leaves him optimistic about his chances to challenge for the top positions and demonstrate that the Melbourne setback is now fully behind him.
