Audi F1 shake-up: Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hülkenberg react to Jonathan Wheatley’s sudden exit. Audi announces Jonathan Wheatley’s departure as Team Principal.

Audi farewell to Jonathan Wheatley not a shock to drivers, confidence in Mattia Binotto

Exactly one week ago, Audi announced the immediate departure of Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley. The former Red Bull figure is widely expected to join the Aston Martin F1 Team after completing a gardening period. On the eve of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, the German team’s driver pairing spoke publicly about the change.

Bortoleto: serenity within the team, trust in Binotto

The news caught even the drivers by surprise, who learned about it just a few days after the Chinese Grand Prix. Nevertheless, the atmosphere within the team has remained stable. Gabriel Bortoleto stated that he discovered the news around the same time as the public, perhaps slightly earlier, but emphasized that internally the situation is quite positive. Mattia Binotto will take over, expanding his responsibilities in a role similar to the one he held at Ferrari, helping to reassure the team at Hinwil. Gabriel Bortoleto highlighted Binotto’s experience and leadership, noting that while he is now taking on additional duties previously handled by Wheatley, he has been the team’s guiding figure for some time.

Reflecting on Wheatley’s tenure, the Brazilian driver acknowledged his contributions, particularly given the improvements already seen during the previous season when the team was still Sauber. Bortoleto emphasized that Wheatley’s leadership created the right environment for growth, noting that the team’s progress does not depend on a single individual but on collective effort. He underlined that the positive direction established last year and continued this year would persist, with the team working together to improve.

Hülkenberg: Wheatley’s departure linked to personal matters

Nico Hülkenberg also commented on the leadership change and how he learned of it. He stated that the atmosphere remains positive, and following the Chinese Grand Prix, the team quickly refocused on preparing for Suzuka. Hülkenberg mentioned he found out about Wheatley’s departure at roughly the same time as everyone else, last Thursday, when the news started circulating. He confirmed there are no additional details beyond what has been officially released and emphasized that the team continues to work collectively without disruption.

Asked about the contrast between Wheatley’s enthusiastic statements in Shanghai and his sudden exit—possibly moving to Aston Martin—Hülkenberg responded with a smile, noting that he does not have further information beyond the official statements. He suggested that Wheatley faced personal reasons preventing long-term commitment, prompting the team to make a responsible decision to relieve him of his role. Nico Hülkenberg concluded that the outcome is now history, and only the future will reveal what comes next.

According to the Italian media, the narrative shared by Nico Hülkenberg aligns with the facts: Jonathan Wheatley’s departure was driven by personal reasons and some disagreements with Mattia Binotto, Audi’s Formula 1 project lead. Jonathan Wheatley will return to England to serve his gardening period while awaiting new opportunities, and Aston Martin reportedly already has an offer on the table for him.

While the leadership transition at Audi was abrupt, the team appears focused on continuity under Mattia Binotto‘s expanded role. Based on the content of the drivers’ reactions at Suzuka, the stability of the 2026 project remains the priority as they navigate these management changes.
