Kimi Antonelli is closing in on his first Formula 1 World Championship and will have his first opportunity to seal the title at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The Mercedes driver heads to the Circuit of the Americas with a 102-point advantage over team-mate George Russell and several possible routes to becoming world champion in Texas.
The title is now firmly within reach and the main question is when Kimi Antonelli will be able to secure it. After eight victories and a remarkably consistent run of results, the Italian has built a commanding advantage with six rounds of the 2026 season remaining.
What Kimi Antonelli needs to win the F1 title in Austin
Kimi Antonelli will arrive at the United States Grand Prix with his first championship match point. The Mercedes driver currently leads George Russell by 102 points and needs to leave Austin with a sufficiently large advantage to make it mathematically impossible for his rivals to catch him over the remaining five Grands Prix.
There will be 125 points available after the United States Grand Prix, assuming a driver wins each of the five remaining races. A tie on points would also favour Kimi Antonelli if he retained the advantage on countback through his greater number of victories.
The clearest route to the championship is straightforward: if Kimi Antonelli wins the United States Grand Prix and George Russell finishes ninth or lower, the Italian can secure the title in Austin, provided the remaining mathematical conditions involving the other contenders are also satisfied.
It is not necessarily the most likely scenario. Max Verstappen and Red Bull currently appear to represent the strongest technical and performance benchmark, while George Russell, despite his recent difficulties, would normally be expected to finish considerably higher than ninth.
If George Russell finishes 10th and scores one point, Kimi Antonelli would still need to win the race to clinch the championship in Texas. If George Russell finishes eighth or higher, the title fight will definitely continue to at least the Mexico City Grand Prix later in October.
Antonelli vs George Russell: Austin title scenario
- If Kimi Antonelli finishes 1st: George Russell must finish 9th or lower for Antonelli to have the necessary advantage over his Mercedes team-mate.
- If George Russell finishes 8th or higher: the championship fight continues to Mexico City.
George Russell therefore remains the main obstacle between Kimi Antonelli and an early championship celebration. The Briton is the Italian’s closest rival in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings, although his hopes have faded significantly as Antonelli’s advantage has grown.
What Lewis Hamilton needs to stay in the F1 title fight
Six drivers remain mathematically in contention for the championship, including Kimi Antonelli. Lewis Hamilton currently occupies third place and cannot afford to lose too many more points to the Mercedes championship leader.
If Kimi Antonelli wins in Austin, Lewis Hamilton would need to finish fourth or higher to remain mathematically in championship contention. A fifth-place finish or worse would eliminate the Ferrari driver.
If Kimi Antonelli finishes second, Lewis Hamilton would need eighth place or better to keep his title hopes alive. If Antonelli is third, Hamilton would need to finish at least 10th.
- Antonelli 1st: Hamilton needs 4th or better to remain in contention.
- Antonelli 2nd: Hamilton needs 8th or better.
- Antonelli 3rd: Hamilton needs 10th or better.
- Antonelli 4th or lower: the Hamilton-Antonelli title battle continues mathematically to Mexico.
Hamilton’s task is therefore increasingly difficult. Any substantial points loss to Kimi Antonelli in Austin could bring the seven-time world champion’s mathematical challenge to an end before Formula 1 reaches Mexico City.
Max Verstappen is also close to mathematical elimination
Max Verstappen is another driver approaching the limit of his mathematical championship chances. For Kimi Antonelli to eliminate the Red Bull driver from contention, the Italian simply needs to score at least six points more than Max Verstappen in Austin.
The situation is particularly intriguing because Max Verstappen is currently one of the most in-form drivers on the grid, having claimed two consecutive victories during another strong late-season Red Bull resurgence. The Dutchman’s recent momentum has coincided with a dramatic improvement in the RB22, with Red Bull’s latest development steps transforming its competitiveness.
If Kimi Antonelli wins the United States Grand Prix, that alone would be enough to eliminate Max Verstappen from the championship regardless of where the Red Bull driver finishes. If the Mercedes driver finishes second, Verstappen would need to finish third or higher to remain mathematically alive.
- Antonelli 1st: Verstappen is eliminated regardless of his result.
- Antonelli 2nd: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes 4th or lower.
- Antonelli 3rd: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes 6th or lower.
- Antonelli 4th: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes 7th or lower.
- Antonelli 5th: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes 8th or lower.
- Antonelli 6th: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes 9th or lower.
- Antonelli 7th: Verstappen is eliminated if he finishes outside the top 10.
- Antonelli 8th or lower: the championship battle between the pair continues to Mexico.
Despite the mathematical situation, Max Verstappen’s recent victories mean Red Bull arrives in Austin as a serious threat for another race win. The team’s resurgence has already changed the competitive picture during the closing stages of the season, with its Baku upgrade proving a major turning point.
Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris face an even simpler equation
The situation is more straightforward for Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. Kimi Antonelli simply needs to avoid losing points to either driver at the United States Grand Prix to eliminate them mathematically from the championship fight.
In other words, if Kimi Antonelli finishes at least level with Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris in terms of points scored in Austin, both rivals will be definitively out of contention for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
Antonelli therefore heads to the Circuit of the Americas with the championship firmly within his control. A victory combined with sufficiently low finishes for George Russell and Lewis Hamilton would allow the Mercedes youngster to become Formula 1 world champion in Texas, while anything less could simply postpone the decisive moment to Mexico City.
