Kevin Magnussen’s farewell
With the Abu Dhabi GP, Kevin Magnussen’s second stint in Formula 1 also came to an end. Called back by Günther Steiner to replace Nikita Mazepin and act as a “support” for Mick Schumacher, the Dane proved he still had the speed to compete in Formula 1, to the point that it was Schumacher himself who was let go at the end of 2022.
However, the comparison with the far more consistent Nico Hülkenberg overwhelmed Kevin Magnussen, who scored about 40% of the points the German did over their two years as teammates (19 compared to 50). Unlike the new lead driver of Kick Sauber, the #20 has no future in Formula 1 and will have to “settle” for the WEC, where he will drive the BMW #15 alongside Raffaele Marciello and Dries Vanthoor.
Kevin Magnussen’s comments
Despite being replaced by Haas, Kevin Magnussen had kind words for the American team, the only one to trust him since 2017: “Here I feel like family. Certainly, we won’t part on bad terms. I think I’ll still feel part of the team next year,” he said to Motorsport Week. “I’ve been with Haas since 2017, which is almost a third of my life, and that’s crazy.”
Haas finished the Constructors’ Championship with 58 points, an unexpected result back in February but one that became reality thanks to clear ideas and optimizing the car’s potential almost every weekend: “It’s nice to have improved like this. I think it’s something the members of this team have deserved for many years. There are very talented people in this team who deserve better opportunities, and the team is heading in the right direction.”
