Juan Pablo Montoya has shared his observations from the Barcelona tests, highlighting that the Mercedes W17 still has significant room for development before it can show its full potential. Despite Lewis Hamilton posting the fastest lap of the session compared to Ferrari, the new Mercedes car already showed encouraging signs from the very first kilometers on the Catalan track. Kimi Antonelli and George Russell completed a total of 500 laps in just three days, a number that not only demonstrates the team’s intense work rate but also confirms the remarkable reliability of the Mercedes F1 engine, capable of handling high loads and stress without issues.
What is the real potential of Mercedes-powered cars?
Speaking on the MontoyAS podcast, Juan Pablo Montoya pointed out that the German team has not yet revealed the W17’s full capabilities: “To give you an idea: from what I’ve heard, the lap times in Barcelona were still three or four seconds away from the car’s true potential.”
The former driver also offered a broader perspective on competitiveness in the championship: “As always, there will be teams that get things right and others that don’t. The interesting thing is that if Mercedes were really ahead, all the teams using the Mercedes F1 engine should be competitive. Then it becomes a matter of understanding who is actually in contention, who still needs to improve, and where everyone else stands. That’s the reality.”
Juan Pablo Montoya’s claims regarding Mercedes’ hidden pace suggest that the 2026 technical reset may have handed a significant early advantage back to Brackley. By suggesting the W17 was running several seconds off its true pace in Barcelona, Juan Pablo Montoya is highlighting the classic F1 tradition of “sandbagging,” where top teams hide their performance to avoid early regulatory scrutiny. If these rumors prove accurate, the reliability and mileage already shown by George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are merely the foundation for a much more dominant performance. As the paddock moves to Bahrain, the focus will not only be on Mercedes’ own speed but also on whether customer teams like McLaren and Williams can capitalize on this powerhouse engine. The 2026 season opener will reveal if Juan Pablo Montoya’s “shock” predictions translate into a new era of Silver Arrows supremacy.
