Jos Verstappen hails Red Bull’s new power unit and Max’s driving spirit. Jos Verstappen praised his son Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s new power unit.

A brave Red Bull

Red Bull’s decision to independently produce its own power unit, coinciding with the major regulatory overhaul in 2026, was certainly ambitious and undeniably courageous. As repeatedly emphasized by team principal Christian Horner first, and later by sporting director Laurent Mekies, the newly established Red Bull Powertrain had to measure itself against historic giants in motorsport and the automotive industry, like Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, and Audi. It was a monumental step, but after the first round of tests, it is impossible not to recognize the competitiveness and reliability of Red Bull’s power unit as one of the season’s positive surprises.

Practically the entire Formula 1 paddock now ranks the Anglo-Austrian team among the top four contenders, which is no small achievement considering the steep challenge Red Bull chose to tackle in developing its own engine. The move is viewed as bold, strategic, and highly ambitious, and the early results suggest it may pay off in both performance and reliability.

Jos (and Max) endorse Red Bull

Speaking to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, Jos Verstappen explained that although it is always difficult to gauge what really happens behind the scenes during pre-season testing, he is pleased with what he has seen so far. He particularly highlighted the engine: “You never really know exactly what is happening behind the tests, but I have to say that I am satisfied. Especially on the engine side. It is working well and is reliable. We will discover its real position in the first race. We are happy; there were a few minor issues, but so far it is functioning perfectly. It is promising.”

Jos Verstappen clearly supports Red Bull’s new course and praised the work environment: “We are very happy because the team is working very well. There are so many new faces, and the atmosphere is excellent. Calm has returned, and this has a positive effect on the entire team. Laurent Mekies? He has excellent interpersonal skills and really understands people.”

Jos on Max’s style and energy

Finally, Jos Verstappen also commented on his son Max Verstappen’s personality and approach to communication: “He says what he thinks and knows what he wants. I think that is very important. He has more fuel than blood in his veins, but he is always himself in everything he does. We have a great relationship and understand each other very well.”

This insight from Jos highlights Max Verstappen’s relentless determination and passion for racing, as well as the strong family support that has shaped his career. Red Bull’s new power unit combined with Max Verstappen’s energy and skill could make for an exciting start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
